Dan Mullen isn’t an SEC head coach anymore, and right now as an analyst for ESPN he’s paid to give his opinion on all things college football.
The former Mississippi State and Florida head coach knows a little something about the offensive side of the football. He has an extensive background as an offensive assistant at many collegiate locales. So, Mullen can detect greatness at the quarterback position when he sees it.
And in 2024, Mullen sees that greatness in Colorado senior quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the son of Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders. On Tuesday, Mullen went on The Pat McAfee Show and told the world exactly what he thinks about the Colorado QB — that he’s the best quarterback in college football.
“I think it’s pretty easy. It’s Shedeur Sanders. You watch him play, the consistency, week in, week out, in what he’s able to do and lead that team,” said Mullen. “I think watching how he’s grown and matured … you watch Shedeur, he can extend plays, make plays. He has tremendous arm strength all over the field. He can play on rhythm and then he can improvise, and he’s getting a great feel on when to do both.”

Mullen also said he’d be shocked if Sanders isn’t the top player picked in the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders has a whopping 3,222 yards passing this season with 27 touchdown passes and just 7 interceptions, helping the Buffaloes to an 8-2 record. Sanders has also run for 4 TDs.
