Dan Mullen on Florida’s huge opening season win: ‘That was awesome for me’
Dan Mullen couldn’t have asked for a much better start to his head coaching career in Gainesville.
Florida stomped Charleston Southern on Saturday, to the tune of 53 to 6 in the Swamp in a game that featured five touchdowns from starting quarterback Feleipe Franks. The Gators had an efficient and balanced performance on offense, passing for 241 yards and rushing for another 203 yards. On defense, the Gators allowed only three (3!) passing yards in the game.
Despite all the positives Mullen may have seen in the game, the Florida coach was concerned with his team making the necessary improvements heading into the SEC opener next week at Kentucky.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Mullen said during his postgame press conference. “Need to see a lot of improvement from week 1 to week 2. Now let’s make some huge strides.”
Moving on from the coachspeak, Mullen let down his guard to discuss just how big this win was for him personally.
“That was awesome, for me almost surreal with the team in the tunnel pregame, running out. That was really special for me. Something I’ll never forget.”
Something Florida AD Scott Stricklin apparently was well aware of after the game. Following the big win, Stricklin surprised Mullen with the game ball:
