Dan Mullen knows all about the Florida-Tennessee rivalry and the significant stakes attached to each contest between the SEC foes. The former Florida coach went 4-0 vs. Tennessee during his time in Gainesville from 2018-21.

In Week 3, No. 11 Tennessee will aim for its first victory vs. Florida at The Swamp since 2003. Florida currently holds a 9-game home winning streak against Tennessee.

During an appearance on SEC radio, Mullen looks back on his time as Florida’s coach and what this rivalry means.

“That is such a big game…It was almost always the first conference game,” Mullen said. “If you want to win the East, whoever won that game, that’s a 2-game swing. You have a 2-game lead on that other team after 1 game…”

Tennessee took last season’s matchup 38-33 in Knoxville for their first win vs. Florida since 2016. Mullen believes this SEC opener is going to set the tone for the rest of the season.

“I think it’s really impressive the streak that Florida has put together of winning that game. It’s why Florida has had so much success throughout the years,” Mullen said. “It’s always put a harder ladder to climb for Tennessee because if they lost this game, that’s a huge setback in their chance to win the East.”
