Mississippi State had an easy weekend, taking care of FCS school UT-Martin on homecoming weekend. A date with Alabama looms large this weekend, and it had Dan Mullen reflecting on the differences between the two programs in his Monday press conference.
The coach said that playing big games late in the season is “what it’s all about and what you work for.”
“It’s going to be fun,” Mullen said, and he added that Alabama has one of, if not the best defenses in the nation, as well as top skill position players Amari Cooper, Blake Sims and T.J. Yeldon.
Mullen knows the difference in recruiting at Mississippi State versus Alabama. He noted that the Crimson Tide “probably have more five-star players sitting on the bench that can’t get a rep on their team than we have on our roster.” Of Alabama’s touted freshman class, only two players — left tackle Cam Robinson and cornerback Troy Brown, both five-star recruits — are seeing significant playing time.
MSU’s coach also gave an update on some injured players. The Bulldogs were able to rest some banged-up contributors against UT-Martin, but Jameon Lewis and Justin Malone, both of whom sat out last Saturday, will return to the field against Alabama. Additionally, Will Redmond, suspended for the UT-Martin game, will return this weekend.
