Danny Kanell says Ty Simpson is ‘very much in play’ for Heisman Trophy
The start to Alabama’s much-hyped ‘redemption season’ has been up-and-down, causing most to cast the Crimson Tide aside for the time being when it comes to the national title picture.
But based on Kaleb DeBoer’s last two wins, which came by a combined margin of 111-14, Danny Kanell was willing to jump on the Crain & Co. podcast and emphatically claim that Ty Simpson is poised for a Heisman Trophy run if the maintains his current trajectory.
“Ty Simpson, since that FSU game, he’s completing 41-of-46 with several drops,” Kanell said. “That’s almost perfect, which is crazy. And I think he’s very much in play for the Heisman Trophy if he continues at this pace.”
Kanell went on to add that the Crimson Tide are still certainly in the SEC and national title hunt, in part because of Simpson’s development but also due to the spark that loss to the Seminoles seemed to provide the team.
“I still think Bama can win the SEC, and I don’t think that’s crazy,” Kanell said. “I was hesitant based on the first game, but I also wanted to see how things played out. And now it’s lit a fire under them and they’re doing things that Nick Saban used to do when he was there. And that is to annihilate their opponents when they are supposed to.”
To Kanell’s point, Simpson has been about as flawless as one can be at the quarterback spot over the past two weeks. After he completed all 17 of his attempts for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns against Louisiana-Monroe, Simpson followed that up by torching Wisconsin for 382 yards and 4 touchdowns while completing 24-of-29 passes.
Of course, Kanell and the nation will receive plenty more answers when Alabama ventures into Athens to face Georgia on Sept. 27.
