Danny Kanell has updated his top 12 with Week 3 in the books.
Kanell opens his top 12 by moving Texas to No. 1 ahead of Georgia. Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns cruised to a 56-7 victory over UTSA despite seeing starting quarterback Quinn Ewers leave the game due to injury. UGA, meanwhile, managed to escape Kentucky with a 13-12 victory.
Though he’s known as an SEC hater, Kanell continues to have 4 SEC teams in his top 5. Tennessee checks in at No. 3 coming off a 71-0 over Kent State that saw the Volunteers score 65 points in the first half. Alabama is No. 5 after a lopsided 42-10 road win at Wisconsin. Sandwiched in between Tennessee and Alabama is No. 4 Miami, which improved to 3-0 with a 62-0 home victory against Ball State.
Kanell addresses some unhappy fans from Big Ten teams. He ranks Ohio State No. 8 and Penn State No. 10. Kanell states that his top 12 is based on resume, not which team would win on a neutral field. He docked the Nittany Lions because of West Virginia’s loss to Pitt. Ohio State has wins over Akron and Western Michigan, and was off in Week 3.
From the SEC, Ole Miss and Mizzou check in at Nos. 9 and 11. Lane Kiffin’s team picked up its first Power 5 win of the season, a 40-6 road victory at Wake Forest. Mizzou picked up a ranked win, defeating No. 24 Boston College 27-21.
