Danny Kanell warns Deion Sanders against ‘revolving door at quarterback’ after Colorado’s loss to Houston

Deion Sanders and Colorado received another reminder on Friday night that life without Shedeur Sanders will be difficult. After losing at home to Georgia Tech before a win over FCS Delaware, the Buffaloes opened Big 12 play with a 36-20 loss to Houston.

Sanders turned to Ryan Staub over 5-star recruit Julian Lewis and Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter after rolling out all 3 quarterbacks against Delaware. But Staub didn’t help matters behind center, going 19-of-35 for just 204 yards while throwing a touchdown and 2 interceptions. That’s obviously not the performance Sanders envisioned from the player he dubbed “Martin Luther Staub.”

Danny Kanell had some advice for Coach Prime on Saturday morning.

“I think you have to be careful that you’re not ruining all of their confidence by having such a quick hook with the first two in the first game, then going to Ryan Staub,” the CBS Sports analyst said. “We’ll see what the reaction is after he had two interceptions (on Friday).”

Kanell noted that this is a new situation for Sanders, who, outside of Jalon Jones at Jackson State in 2020, had always had Shedeur as his starting QB.

“If you have a revolving door at quarterback, it’s going to potentially ruin the season for them,” Kanell said. “And I also wonder what it means in that locker room, not to mention what it means for the transfer portal implications.

“… I think it’s just a dynamic that Coach Prime is going to have to manage very delicately, or else you could lose the season even worse than we thought it could be.”
