When it comes to having healthy options under center for the upcoming college football season, UCF doesn’t appear to have much luck this year.

Following the devastating injury to starting quarterback Mackenzie Milton in last season’s late November win over South Florida, the Knights recently discovered they would be down another signal-caller heading into the upcoming season.

On Wednesday, UCF announced redshirt sophomore QB Darriel Mack would be sidelined after breaking his ankle outside of the field of play. Mack saw the field last season, completing 51 of 100 attempts for 619 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

“Quarterback Darriel Mack Jr. suffered a broken ankle from non-football related activity this week and there is no specific timetable for his return. He will not be available for training camp.

“We hope Darriel has a speedy recovery, but we are excited about the talent we have in the quarterback room to start the season.”

Fortunately for UCF, they landed Notre Dame graduate transfer QB Brandon Wimbush this offseason. Wimbush was Notre Dame’s starting signal-caller to start last season, however, he lost his job during the Irish’s run to the College Football Playoff. Wimbush has thrown for 2,606 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions during his collegiate career. He has one final season of eligibility remaining.
