The Arizona Bowl became the latest bowl game to see a team withdraw after Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports, the bowl’s sponsor, announced that Boise State withdrew because too many players contracted COVID-19.
Portnoy tweeted, “We are actively looking for a replacement. I suggest @WSUCougarFB does a poll of players whether they want to play in Az bowl or Sun Bowl.”
Portnoy raised this idea after Washington State arrived in El Paso, Texas on Sunday, and soon found out that its opponent in the Sun Bowl, the Miami Hurricanes, could not play in the bowl because of high COVID-19 cases.
Another possibility is that Central Michigan, which is in Tucson to prepare for the Arizona Bowl, travels to El Paso to play in the Sun Bowl.
The Arizona Bowl is the latest bowl to have a major logistical issue involving one of its teams after the Military, Hawaii and Fenway bowls all called off their games, and the Gator Bowl swapped Texas A&M for Rutgers to play Wake Forest.
