The Davey O’Brien Award is out with the 2023 preseason watch list.
The award is given annually to the nation’s best college quarterback. It is the oldest and most prestigious national award for the QB position.
Caleb Williams — a finalist for the award a season ago and the 2022 Heisman winner — is back on the watch list. A number of semifinalists from a season ago, including SEC stars Jayden Daniels and Will Rogers, are back on the watch list.
From the 35 players on the watch list, the SEC tied for most players from a single conference with 5. The ACC and Big 12 also had 5 players on the watchlist while the Big Ten, Pac-12 and American each placed 4 players on the watchlist.
These are the SEC QBs to land on the list:
- Jayden Daniels, LSU
- KJ Jefferson, Arkansas
- Devin Leary, Kentucky
- Joe Milton III, Tennessee
- Will Rogers, Mississippi State

The most recent winner of the award was TCU’s Max Duggan. The SEC went on a 3-year stretch of winning the Davey O’Brien Award from 2019-21 with LSU’s Joe Burrow and Alabama’s Mac Jones and Bryce Young taking home the honor.
