After missing Week 1 against Syracuse, Tennessee right tackle David Sanders Jr. – a projected starter this season – is expected to miss Week 2 against ETSU, according to reports from GoVols247.
This is a concerning development for Tennessee. Sanders was a surprise scratch from the Vols’ season opening win over Syracuse, which Josh Heupel mentioned was due to an injury he suffered in the days before the game. Heupel told reporters following the game that Sanders could have played, but the medical staff decided it wasn’t the best idea to move forward.
For obvious reasons, this new develop seems to contradict Heupel’s statement – unless the injury has taken a turn for the worse or there is another reason for his absence.
In the short term, this won’t affect Tennessee much. The Vols’ offensive line was fantastic against Syracuse and face a much weaker opponent in Week 2. It is, however, an unfortunate development for Sanders, who could have used a game to ease him into Week 3 against Georgia.
Will Tennessee even see Sanders against the Bulldogs? Of course, there’s no word as of now. Regardless, starting a college career against Syracuse or ETSU is one thing, but the Bulldogs defensive line could destroy the freshman’s confidence – especially if he simply isn’t ready for that level of competition.
The Vols and Buccaneers face off at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
