Deion Sanders: Shedeur, Travis Hunter were snubbed from awards because I coach them

Deion Sanders believes he has two of the best players in all of college football at Colorado in the form of quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way phenom Travis Hunter. That duo delivered star performances in the season opener, but the head coach believes the two are being overlooked on the national stage.
During his Thursday coaches show, Coach Prime made it sound unfathomable that Shedeur and Hunter would not earn every national award that was handed out for Week 1. He described the situation as one where the 2 Buff stars should be “the 2 leading Heisman guys,” and the only reason they are not leading everything is because Deion is their coach.
“You got a guy who threw for the most yards in college football, you got a guy who was proved that he was the most spectacular player in college football. Shouldn’t those two be talked about all week about the two leading Heisman guys?” questioned Sanders. “Or every weekly award that was given out should have gone to those two guys.
“But it’s almost like, ‘No, we can’t do that. Their coach is Deion Sanders, we’re not going to do that. We’re not gonna let him get away with that’.”
The host responded by saying Hunter was the Paul Hornung Award Player of the Week to which Sanders replied that “he should have been” emphatically. Shedeur was also an honorable mention for one weekly honor, but that was not enough for Deion.
“How do you honorable mention the guy who threw for the most yards in college football?” questioned Deion. “First of all, what is an honorable mention? I’m honorably mentioning you?”
For what it’s worth, Miami QB Cam Ward was the Davey O’Brien QB of the Week after accounting for over 400 yards and 3 touchdowns in a blowout road win over Florida. It’s hard to discredit that kind of performance, and it would be inaccurate to try and say Shedeur or Hunter are overlooked nationally.
Many analysts across the country continue to rave about the 2 players, and Hunter in particular for his electric 2-way ability. In fact, ESPN’s NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper declared Hunter “the best pure football player” available in this draft class.

It also must be said that Colorado was playing an FCS-level opponent in North Dakota State for the season opener. The level of competition can undoubtedly be a factor when accounting for weekly honors, and both players are likely to receive greater recognition if they deliver strong performances in Big 12 play.
Here is the coaches’ show with Deion’s comments beginning just after the 4-minute mark:
