Derek Mason has spent nearly three decades as a football coach, most of it within the ranks of college football. Now, he’s taking that experience with him into the broadcast booth.
The former Vanderbilt head coach made the announcement Wednesday evening that he is joining the SEC Network for the fall. He will be a part of a team that includes Dave Neal and Taylor Davis with those two personalities helping to “mentor this veteran coach in his new digs” per Mason.
I’m truly excited to be part of the @SECNetwork family. @DaveNealSports and @taylorbethdavis are gifted broadcast personalities who will mentor this veteran coach in his new digs. Coming soon this fall on Saturdays near you. ALL GAS…NO BRAKES?#ItJustMeansMore

Mason was the head coach at Vanderbilt from 2014-20, posting a 27-55 overall record during his tenure with the Commodores. He did lead the program to a pair of bowl appearances in 2016 and 2018 but was unable to produce a winning season during his time there.
Mason’s coaching career dates back to 1994. He also spent a brief stint at Auburn as the defensive coordinator in 2021 and served in the same post at Oklahoma State a season ago.
Commissioner Greg Sankey offered warm wishes and welcome back to Mason on social media:
Congratulations and welcome (back) to Coach Mason as he joins the @SECNetwork! https://t.co/UG7EKBUYoT
