Derrick Henry wasn’t too popular of a man with the Titans Monday.
It marked the first day of Tennessee’s voluntary workouts, and Henry was nowhere to be found. Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jurrell Casey had some strong words for Henry, too.
“It definitely puts that little check mark in the back of my mind and lets me know who I can count on, who I can’t count on,” Casey said. “To see your teammates show up is definitely great.”
Ouch.
Well, as it turns out, Henry is enrolled in classes at Alabama, and that’s potentially why he didn’t show up for the workouts, according to the Tennessean. Final exams run through the first week of May.
Henry was one of two Titans’ players to skip voluntary workouts, with the other being reserve cornerback Bennett Okotcha.
It seems, though, that head coach Mike Mularkey wasn’t aware of the reason Henry was absent.
“It’s their choice,” Mularkey said about the players not reporting. “Maybe I used to get disappointed. I have no control over it. It’s their option. It’s their choice. It’s whatever they feel is best for them.”
We commend Henry for working towards finishing his degree, and he’s taking some heat right now for his decision. I’m not going to criticize Henry, but if the reason he skipped workouts is because he’s finishing the semester at school, I sure would have worked this out ahead of time with the team and the head coach.
The former Heisman Trophy winning running back rushed for 490 yards and five touchdowns during his rookie season.
