Deshaun Davis’ college football career ends with a homecoming. The Prichard product picked up two “keys to the city” on Friday, but the week has been about more than seeing family and old friends. Davis wants to use Saturday’s Senior Bowl to prove that he can do it all at linebacker, even drop into pass coverage (something he was rarely asked to do at Auburn).
“I feel like I have the label as a run-stopping linebacker or a box linebacker,” Davis told reporters, per Auburn Undercover’s Brandon Marcello. “People try to take away some athleticism that I have. Like I was just saying, primarily this week that’s what I came down here to prove: I can move in space, I can play in space. If I have to go out and cover, I can cover.”
There will be the scouting combine and pro day for Davis to show off for scouts, but the Senior Bowl will be the last game of his college football career and final chance to show that there is more to his skill set than, as he said, playing in the box and stopping the run. For Davis, the road from Vigor to potentially playing in the NFL has had its ups and downs. AL.com recently published a feature on Davis, by Ben Thomas, detailing how close he came to transferring from Auburn until Kevin Steele replaced Will Muschamp as defensive coordinator.
