Tennessee signed Rick Barnes to a contract extension through the 2023-24 season on Thursday, and that also came with a raise for the Vols’ coach.
According to Mike Wilson of the Knoxville News Sentinel, Barnes will make $3.25 million in 2018-19. His salary will increase by $100,000 each season, meaning he’ll make $3.75 million in 2023-24.
Barnes will be the second-highest paid coach in the SEC behind only Kentucky’s John Calipari.
Barnes signed a six-year contract when he became Tennessee’s coach in April 2015. That deal paid him $2.25 million annually.
The deal is certainly deserving as Barnes turned around the Vols program and led them to the SEC regular-season championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament last season.
After winning 26 games last year, Tennessee appears poised to have another strong season in 2018-19 under Barnes.
