Joel Klatt makes case for DeVonta Smith Heisman candidacy: ‘(He) should start getting a little bit of love’

It was another spectacular performance for Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith in the Crimson Tide’s dominant win over LSU on Saturday in Baton Rogue.
The senior added 8 catches, 231 yards and 3 touchdowns in Alabama’s 55-17 win over LSU to his total and now stands at 1,305 yards and 15 touchdowns—with one regular-season game and the SEC Championship Game remaining.
Smith has benefited from his chemistry with Mac Jones, who is squarely in the Heisman Trophy conversation. But the buzz for Smith to be included in those discussions has gathered plenty of steam in recent weeks as the Louisiana native continues to put up eye-popping numbers.
“He’s easily one of, if not the best player in America, and if we’re going to really actually going to give the Heisman to the best player in America, I think DeVonta Smith should start getting a little bit of love,” commented FOX Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt in the video below.
“We’ll see if that starts happening here as we get down the stretch.”

Smith ending up as a Heisman finalist will see either Kyle Trask, Justin Fields or Jones being squeezed out of the top 3 when it’s all said and done, but if it ends up being Jones that misses out, he won’t mind his favorite target being up for the annual award instead—whether or not the Tide finish the year as national champions.
