The Heisman Trophy has gone to a quarterback every year since 2015, when Alabama RB Derrick Henry won it. In 9 of the last 10 years, a QB has taken home the trophy.

That is unlikely to change this year, as Alabama QB Mac Jones and Florida QB Kyle Trask top many voters’ current lists.

However, Alabama WR DeVonta Smith is also having a huge season. After putting up 8 catches for 231 yards and 3 touchdowns against LSU on Saturday night, Smith was asked about his Heisman candidacy.

He said there’s more quarterbacks can do to stay in the Heisman race. Plus, he added, he’s here to win a national championship first and foremost (via AL.com):

“The quarterbacks, there’s more things for you to do — more stats that you can add to it,” Smith said of the attention on quarterbacks in the Heisman race.

“Ultimately I’m here to win a championship. If I’m in the Heisman race, I’m in it.”

Smith still has a couple of games left to impress Heisman voters, but as he mentioned in his quote, his stats also only help Jones’s candidacy.

We’ll see what happens moving forward, but it seems Smith, who has probably nearly locked up the Biletnikoff Award — given annually to the nation’s best receiver — will at least get some Heisman consideration.
