Dillon Mitchell joined Texas as a 5-star prospect and one of the top high school recruits in the country via the class of 2022. After starting 38 games as a true freshman, Mitchell announced his future plans Wednesday evening.

In a note on Twitter, Mitchell confirmed he will be testing the NBA Draft waters, but Mitchell is also keeping college eligibility so a return to the Longhorns is still in play:

“Longhorn Nation, thank you for giving me the opportunity to live out my dreams,” wrote Mitchell. “I want to thank God for blessing me with this gift, but I want to thank y’all for the ultimate love and support. Moody Center was rocking all season long thanks to the greatest fans and city of Austin.

“Thank you to Coach Terry and the entire Longhorns Basketball staff, Coach Reese, Coach Campbell and all of my coaches from growing up…

“I’m excited to announce that I am declaring for the 2023 NBA Draft while maintaining my college eligibility.”

Mitchell was one of three Longhorns to start all 38 games this past season, but he averaged just 17.5 minutes played and 4.3 points per game. We’ll see what kind of feedback he gets during the draft process and how that influences his final decision for next season.
