With Clemson coming off back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances and a national championship win, few can argue that the Tigers are the best college football team in the state of South Carolina.  To most people, the obvious answer for second-best team would be Will Muschamp’s Gamecocks.

Newberry coach Todd Knight isn’t so sure. In a recent clip from WOLO ABC, Knight talks about opening the season against The Citadel and suggests the Bulldogs may be the second-best team in the Palmetto State.

“Well, when I think you open up with a team like The Citadel – arguably they might be the second-best team in the state of South Carolina,” Knight said. “They’re a really, really good team. That raises our level and what our kids want to go out and try to prove. So I like starting off that way.”

Highly complimentary coach speak is nothing new. Throughout the season, Muschamp and other SEC coaches will talk up the next opponent as one of the toughest opponents on the schedule. It’s what coaches do in front of the camera.

Knight may not have been trying to offend the Gamecocks, but the Citadel’s 2015 upset of South Carolina may have been on his mind when he suggested the Bulldogs could be considered No. 2 in South Carolina.
