DJ Lagway got his first career start on Saturday against Samford, as previous starter Graham Mertz was knocked out of the loss last week with a concussion.

Lagway came into the game last week to fill in for Mertz, and he led the team to a touchdown in the fourth quarter. In his first career start on Saturday, he had a monster game. Lagway was able to throw the first touchdown of his career early in the third quarter.

Through 3 quarters, the Gators were in complete control of the game, as Lagway showed the ability that made him one of the elite prospects in the country.  At the time of publication, he had thrown for more than 450 yards and 3 touchdowns through 3.5 quarters, which officially broke the freshman record that had previously been held by Chris Leak (268 yards).

Lagway’s second touchdown pass went to Aidan Mizell for 41 yards.

His third score was an 85-yard pop pass to Eugene Wilson III.

With Mertz’s status in question moving forward, Gator fans have to be extremely happy to see the performance of their freshman quarterback. While we may not know until game-time next week who the starting quarterback is, you can bet Florida fans are going to be screaming for the freshman to keep playing.

Florida next week gets back to what is being regarded as one of the toughest schedules in college football history, as they host Texas A&M on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be on ABC.
