DJ Lagway will want to burn the tape of Saturday’s 20-10 loss to LSU.

Billy Napier shouldn’t let him. Lagway endured the worst night of his young career, throwing 5 interceptions in a 10-point road defeat. One of the picks was returned for a touchdown. One of them was thrown into triple coverage on third down when Florida was in field goal range. One of them was just thrown up for grabs to avoid a sack.

“Is he your quarterback going forward?” ESPN’s Sean McDonough asked at one point deep into the fourth quarter.

McDonough’s partner in the booth, Greg McElroy, quickly answered, “Yes.” But the point was made. It was a disastrous night for Lagway.

The sophomore quarterback finished 33-for-49 passing for 287 yards. He had 1 passing touchdown and 19 rushing yards.

The performance was the first 5-interception game by an SEC quarterback since Matt Corral threw 5 against LSU on Dec. 19, 2020. It was also the first time a Gator quarterback threw at least 4 interceptions in a game since Rex Grossman did it on Oct. 12, 2002, against… LSU.

With the Gators sitting at 1-2 on the season now, Lagway needs to regroup quickly. The Gators travel to Miami next weekend to face a top-5 Hurricanes (3-0) squad.

In the meantime, Lagway will probably want to avoid social media. It was not kind to him after the game.
