Following the Gators’ 23-21 win over Mississippi State, Florida quarterback DJ Lagway was asked if it would be fair to fire head coach Billy Napier.
“I just focus on what I can control,” Lagway responded.
The Napier dilemma really crystallized on Saturday night. Days after reporting suggested Florida could seek to move on from Napier this weekend if he lost, Napier coached Florida to a 2-point win over a Bulldogs team that had not won an SEC game since October 2023.
Fans chanted for Napier to be fired during the game and they booed him off the field after the game. For the true sophomore quarterback to be questioned about his coach’s future offers a pretty clear view into where things are at in Gainesville.
To his credit, Lagway thanked the coach who recruited him to Florida and kept his head down.
“I’m extremely grateful for Coach Napier and everything he’s done for me and my family,” Lagway said.
Lagway was a 5-star recruit in the 2024 class. Ranked as the second-best quarterback in the country, Lagway’s recruitment was viewed as a turning point in the Napier tenure.
Instead, Napier finds himself on one of the hottest seats in the country before Lagway finishes his sophomore campaign.
