DJ Lagway is throwing the football for the Florida Gators.
That sound you just heard was all of Gainesville collectively exhaling.
The status of the rising sophomore quarterback has been closely monitored all offseason. Lagway was a limited participant in the spring because of a shoulder issue. Florida coach Billy Napier consistently signaled that there was nothing to worry about, but when fall camp opened this week, Lagway was dealing with another ailment.
Gators Online insider Zach Abolverdi joined The Paul Finebaum Show on Thursday and said Lagway was briefly in a walking boot with a calf injury that caused him to miss the first day of training camp. Abolverdi said on Finebaum’s show that the calf issue wasn’t believed to be anything serious, but it was enough of an issue that it sidelined Lagway for the first practice session.
Given Lagway’s importance to the Gators in 2025, his health is under the microscope.
The Orlando Sentinel’s Edgar Thompson reported from camp on Saturday that Lagway was using a compression sleeve on his left leg during practice and did not warm up with the team at the beginning of practice No. 4.
However, Lagway did take part in throwing drills later.
And there were plenty more clips to be shared on social media.
Lagway threw for 1,915 yards and 12 touchdowns as a true freshman last season. He had 9 picks and a sub-60% completion rate, but the deep connection was a pleasant surprise for a Florida team that surged once he entered the starting lineup. Lagway has areas that need improvement in 2025, but the tools are all there.
Assuming health, he provides a reason for optimism that Florida can navigate one of the country’s most difficult schedules and have a successful season in 2025.
If nothing else, it’s just good to see him back on the field and slinging it after an offseason that was anything but smooth.
Derek Peterson does a bit of everything, not unlike Taysom Hill. He has covered Oklahoma, Nebraska, the Pac-12, and now delivers CFB-wide content.
