Drake Maye is expected to make his first-career NFL start on Sunday, according to a report.

Maye will be replacing veteran Jacoby Brissett, who started the first 5 games for the New England Patriots. However, Brissett has struggled as a passer so far this season, so the team will see what it has in its No. 3 overall draft pick.

That news was first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Tuesday afternoon:

Maye has appeared in 1 game so far in his NFL career. He completed 4-of-8 passes for 22 yards back on Sept. 19 against the New York Jets.

Expectations for Maye will be low this season — at least from a team perspective. The Patriots entered the year with little hope of making the postseason in Year 1 of the Jerod Mayo era. Ahead of Maye’s first start in Week 6, New England is tied for the NFL’s worst record at 1-4.

Longterm expectations for Maye are quite high, however. The Patriots spent the No. 3 overall draft pick on Maye in this past year’s draft as they continue to search for a franchise quarterback. New England has not been able to find a longterm answer at that position since Tom Brady left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the 2019 season.

The Patriots will face the Houston Texans at home on Sunday.
