Drew Butler shares why he made a lot of money on Georgia-Florida as an NFL rookie
Drew Butler made some money on college football before it was cool.
Butler, who punted for Georgia from 2008-11, cashed in on the Georgia-Florida rivalry in 2012 as a rookie with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He joined Saturday Football Uncensored this week to talk about his best memories from the rivalry.
Butler made a bet with former Florida players Marquise Pouncey, Chris Rainey, and Marcus Gilbert who were also on the Steelers. Here’s the story:
“2012 was my rookie year. I was in Pittsburgh. On the Steelers was Marquise Pouncey, Chris Rainey, Marcus Gilbert, and another Florida guy. Georgia was really good that year and Florida was also really good. There’s a such thing called a locker room bet,” Butler said. “Guys walk up to you if your team is playing their team, no point spread. They named the price, shake hands and you’re on. If you turn down a locker room bet, not a good look. I’m a rookie I’ve got all these guys swarming me. You know, $500 locker room bet, $1000, $100.”

That year the game was decided by a Jordan Reed fumble caused by Jarvis Jones. It’s safe to say that Butler was excited to earn some extra cash.
“I’m sweating this game in my hotel room by myself. Jarvis Jones, Jordan Reed pops the ball out we win the game,” said Butler. “I’m going nuts. I’m like, ‘Dude, hell yeah.’ I’m fired up and we go to team meeting that night and Mike Tomlin starts the meeting by going, ‘Drew Butler stand up. Tell everybody how much money you just made on all these Florida guys. That’s my favorite memory, because it won me a significant amount of money.”
Head coach Mike Tomlin started the meeting that day by asking Butler how much money was made off the Gators in the room.
His teammates cheered accordingly.
Georgia and Florida will meet again on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
