LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said the fact that freshman Myles Brennan will get game reps at quarterback this week does not mean he will be taking Danny Etling’s job.

Orgeron said Thursday Etling is still the No. 1, according to a report from Ross Dellenger of The Advocate.

“Danny is our starter. I’m not saying that couldn’t happen (that Myles Brennan becomes the starter),” Orgeron said. “We’re not putting Myles in to take over Danny’s spot. We’re giving him reps in case he has to play. We (didn’t) have a second-team quarterback with reps in a game. Now, Myles has been that guy.”

The Tigers host Troy on Saturday. It remains to be seen whether Orgeron will want to play the younger Brennan against SEC teams down the road.

“Brennan is likely to only see time if the Tigers are holding a somewhat cushy lead, the coach suggested, similar to last week’s win over Syracuse,” the report stated.

“I plan on Myles again in an opportune situation where the game is still on the line, but we feel like we can put him in and give him some game-time experience,” Orgeron said.

“We’ll see,” the coach responded when asked about Brennan getting meaningful reps against SEC competition. “Take it one game at a time.”
