Ed Orgeron may have won a national title at LSU in 2019, but before that he coached at Ole Miss. Though his tenure wasn’t a particularly successful one — he went 10-25 from 2005-07 and was let go after his third season — he knows the job.
At present, Lane Kiffin finds himself at the center of the conversation in college football. Where will Kiffin be coaching next season? That’s the central question, as he is said to be a top candidate for both the open LSU and Florida jobs.
Kiffin has built something special at Ole Miss and has the program positioned to make its first College Football Playoff appearance. Still, Orgeron said that a job like Florida is on a different level than Ole Miss.
“I loved my time at Ole Miss, but when was the last time they won a championship?” Orgeron asked during a radio appearance on Wednesday. “You’re in Jacksonville? Put me [in] a Suburban and we can drive an hour anywhere and find a couple All-Americans.”
Orgeron last coached in 2021, and he has recently said that he is looking to get back into coaching in the future.
Kiffin is saying all the right things as he and the Rebels prepare for a Week 10 matchup against a South Carolina team that nearly knocked off Alabama last Saturday. He is calling for fans to sell the game out as the Rebels are getting a rare opportunity to host a night SEC game in Oxford.
Kickoff for the game between the Rebels and Gamecocks is at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN).
