Eli Gold and Alabama beat writer Nick Kelly will remember the grave digger play for quite some time, much like Alabama fans will.

Alabama fans understand how special the Iron Bowl each year. Gold talked about the significance of it for the state of Alabama.

“The Iron Bowl stands upon itself in the state of Alabama,” said Gold. “You knew the importance of the game and you just hold your breath.”

What started with a bad snap that put the offense on the 31-yard line ended up saving Alabama’s season.

“You know as every sportscaster is taught, ‘Well there aren’t many plays in the book for 4th and 31,’ said Gold. “And the home team fans were going wild, until the grave digger showed up.”

Alabama beat writer Nick Kelly basically had the story about the loss already written up. All he had to do was hit publish and add the final, but he decided to look up and watch. It’s safe to say he was glad he did.

“I pretty much had the losing story written,” said Kelly. “It was ready to publish, it was all set I just needed to add that final score and I decided to look up and just watch to see what happened. I’m sure glad that I did.”

Jalen Milroe found Isaiah Bond in the corner of the endzone, and the rest was history.

The irony was that Alabama’s grave had been dug, but the Crimson Tide ended up pulling themselves out.

“It’s kinda ironic because, Alabama basically, it’s grave had been dug,” said Kelly.  “Alabama found a way to climb out of that grave.”

Gold has seen enough Alabama football to know to never count them out. The Iron Bowl further proved his stance.

“I’ve seen enough of this team to never count them out,” Gold said. “This was for the state championship. This was for bragging rights. This was for whatever might happen this season. You just know how big it is as it’s unfolding.”

The grave digger could end up being more important than fans realize, especially if Alabama ends up in the College Football Playoff.
