Georgia scored a win over Alabama on the recruiting trail earlier this month when one of the top quarterbacks for 2017 flipped to become a Bulldog.
Four-star prospect Jake Fromm, the No. 3 pro-style QB in the class according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, changed his mind on March 3 after a unofficial visit to Athens the week prior.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder from Warner Robins, Ga., grew up rooting for Georgia, so it’s not a huge surprise that he made the move, but he gave a more specific reason to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz.
“I’m a relationship guy,” Fromm said. “Coach Smart, he was kind of my head recruiter (at Alabama). Really fell in love with him and what he had to offer. And just really, when he went to Georgia, it opened up a lot of doors for me. And being a Dog, it’s what I grew up watching. It’s where I always wanted to be, and just really thankful that he went over there and believed in me. And being a Dog is just where I always wanted to be.”
Fromm is one of six commitments so far in the 2017 class, which already includes three other four-star prospects: the No. 2 safety Richard LeCounte, the No. 10 outside linebacker Jaden Hunter and the No. 14 outside linebacker Breon Dixon.
Smart also has a pledge from a couple three-stars in No. 24 offensive guard Justin Shaffer and receiver Xavier Jenkins.
Alabama, despite not having a QB in the cycle yet, isn’t exactly struggling as it holds a commitment from the No. 1 overall prospect in RB Najee Harris along with five other four-stars in inside linebacker Gary Johnson, OT Alex Leatherwood, ATH Chadarius Townsend, S Xavier McKinney and RB Brian Robinson.
