The No. 8-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide started the season off with a loss for the first time in over a decade this past weekend, losing to unranked Florida State by a final score of 31-17.
It was an extremely embarrassing loss, given the immense hype the Tide came into the season with, and things are so bad that some have begun to wonder whether it’s time to start questioning if Kalen DeBoer is the right man for the job down in Tuscaloosa.
Among this list is ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky, who sounded off on the putrid performance on Monday morning’s episode of Get Up.
“If Nick Saban watched this tape back yesterday, he would have kicked some of these kids off the team. That’s how bad it was,” he said. “I think it’s fair to say, can Kalen DeBoer survive September?
“When you watch this tape, they look like a shell of what Nick Saban built them to become when it comes to effort, toughness and desire. They look like a shell of it.”
DeBoer knew he was always going to deal with the comparisons to Saban when he took this job, and those comparisons were always going to grow louder and louder with every single loss.
They were there last season in the midst of their 9-4 campaign, but many gave the first-year head coach some slack, given the nature of the situation he was walking into.
Now that he’s in Year 2, however, the amount of goodwill he has significantly decreased, and it’s only going to continue dropping with every subsequent bad performance.
