Oklahoma football is looking like a national championship contender once again. ESPN’s Booger McFarland is already buying in.

“John Mateer and Oklahoma are a problem of the serious kind,” McFarland mentioned in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “I said it last week. He is my Heisman pick.”

Mateer put together 344 yards of offense and 3 total touchdowns in a 24-13 win over Michigan on Saturday. With 19 carries and 2 rushing touchdowns, the transfer QB from Washington State is giving Oklahoma a Lamar Jackson vibe. And according to ESPN Research, Mateer has now recorded at least 1 rushing and 1 passing touchdown in 8-straight games — joining Lamar and D’Eriq King as the only players to do it since 2015.

“You saw what he can do,” Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables said of Mateer, per ESPN’s Eli Lederman. “He falls forward a lot. He’s got great strength and great skills. Tough guy. He’s fearless. He attacks everything without fear.”

Mateer’s willingness to run the football has made him as unpredictable as any signal-caller in the country. If he keeps stacking wins as the Sooners head into SEC play. McFarland may not be the only one pushing him to the front of the Heisman Trophy conversation.
