This weekend, Arizona State was supposed to take on Cal in Pac-12 action. However, a COVID-19 outbreak within the Sun Devils’ program forced that game to be canceled.
Head coach Herm Edwards is one of the Sun Devils to test positive for the virus, and it sounds like there are a lot more.
Per ESPN’s Matt Barrie, an Arizona State alum, there are 6 staff members who have the virus and an entire side of the ball has tested positive. Barrie said one source called the situation at Arizona State “really, really bad”:
The situation within the ASU football program is dire. The facility is closed. An entire side of the ball has it. 6-staff members are positive. And they’re just at the beginning of the outbreak. When asked to describe it I was told: “This is bad. Really, really bad.”

Obviously, the first hope is that all those who tested positive make full recoveries. There’s also the possibility that next weekend’s Arizona State game at Colorado gets canceled if this outbreak continues.
The Pac-12 is off to a rocky start this season, and it doesn’t look like much relief is coming this week or next.
