ESPN FPI Rankings After Week 1: Texas stays in No. 1 spot despite loss to Ohio State

Week 1 of the college football season is (mostly) in the books after an exciting Thursday-Saturday slate of games. We saw No. 1 Texas fall at No. 3 Ohio State. We saw No. 4 Clemson lose to No. 9 LSU. And most shockingly, we saw No. 8 Alabama get thumped by unranked Florida State in Tallahassee.
There are going to be overreactions galore to Saturday’s results, but don’t expect ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) to sour too much on the Longhorns.
The FPI rankings were rife with controversy heading into the season, and the FPI detractors are going to have a field day with the updated rankings.
As you can see below, Texas retained the No. 1 spot despite losing to the Buckeyes. Here’s a look at the updated top 25 FPI rankings:
- Texas
- Georgia
- Ohio State
- Ole Miss
- Penn State
- USC
- Oregon
- Notre Dame
- Tennessee
- LSU
- South Carolina
- Florida
- Alabama
- Texas A&M
- Miami
- Auburn
- BYU
- Mizzou
- Utah
- Michigan
- Clemson
- Oklahoma
- Iowa State
- SMU
- Kansas
Clearly, FPI isn’t fazed by a 1-score road loss to a top-3 team like Ohio State, but wouldn’t it make sense to flip Ohio State to No. 1 and at least drop Texas to No. 2?

We’ll see what happens moving forward during the 2025 season, but for now, the Longhorns remain the FPI kings.
