ESPN FPI Rankings after Week 6: A new No. 1 team emerges, Texas drops multiple spots

Week 6 may not have had the quantity of games we’re used to seeing on a college football Saturday, as many teams (including nearly half of the SEC) were on byes.
However, the quality of games was as high as ever. Florida took down the Texas Longhorns in The Swamp. Alabama got some revenge against Vanderbilt. Miami and Florida State played a high-quality, entertaining game in the late window.
On Sunday morning, ESPN’s Football Power Index was updated, and there was a change at the top. Ohio State is the new No. 1 team in the nation, jumping Oregon despite the Ducks being off this weekend. The shift was likely due to Penn State losing at UCLA, which caused Oregon’s win in Happy Valley last weekend to lose some of its luster.
Alabama at No. 3 leads the way for the SEC, but a grand total of 11 SEC squads find their way into the FPI top 25 this week. Here’s a look at the updated FPI rankings:
- Ohio State
- Oregon
- Alabama
- Indiana
- Notre Dame
- Georgia
- Ole Miss
- Texas
- Miami
- USC
- Tennessee
- Michigan
- Texas A&M
- Texas Tech
- Oklahoma
- Vanderbilt
- LSU
- Mizzou
- Penn State
- BYU
- Utah
- Nebraska
- Auburn
- Florida State
- TCU
The 5 SEC teams that didn’t crack the top 25 are: Florida (No. 26), South Carolina (No. 29), Arkansas (No. 41), Mississippi State (No. 45) and Kentucky (No. 50).
