ESPN FPI rankings after Week 9: Alabama falls from top 3 despite win

The Big Ten is an incredibly top-heavy conference this year. The top 3 teams — Ohio State, Oregon and Indiana — are elite. Beyond that, who do you trust? Washington? Michigan?
The SEC, on the other hand, seems to be the more-balanced conference. It might not have an elite team on the Buckeyes’ level (depending on how you feel about Alabama), but 1-15 (sorry Kentucky), there are no easy wins to be had.
In the updated ESPN Football Power Index (FPI), that sentiment is echoed. Ohio State, Indiana and Oregon hold down the top 3 spots, respectively, but the SEC leads the way with 11 teams in the top 25, led by Alabama at No. 4.
The Crimson Tide fell a spot despite a narrow road win at South Carolina in Week 9. Notre Dame rounds out the top 5.
Here’s a look at the full FPI top 25 rankings after Week 9:
- Ohio State
- Indiana
- Oregon
- Alabama
- Notre Dame
- Georgia
- Texas
- Texas A&M
- USC
- Miami
- Utah
- Ole Miss
- Tennessee
- Texas Tech
- Michigan
- BYU
- Vanderbilt
- Oklahoma
- Mizzou
- Iowa
- Penn State
- LSU
- Washington
- Auburn
- Georgia Tech
That means 5 SEC teams didn’t make the top 25 — Florida (No. 27), Arkansas (No. 39), South Carolina (No. 40), Mississippi State (No. 44) and Kentucky (No. 53).
