Alabama is conducting a quarterback competition this offseason as the program looks to replace Jalen Milroe ahead of the 2025 season.
With Milroe turning pro, that leaves 3 viable options for the Crimson Tide at quarterback: Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell. The competition is expected to go into fall camp, but for now, a clear leader seems to be emerging.
ESPN’s Chris Low, who is in Tuscaloosa this week, shared his thoughts on the competition on Wednesday morning. Low said he believes Simpson is “best positioned” to win the job but that Mack has “real support” in the locker room. Russell is a bit of a wildcard as Low views him as the most talented passer in the room, but he’s a true freshman going through his first spring camp.
Simpson has been considered the favorite due to his experience. While Mack and Russell are younger players, Simpson has been in Tuscaloosa for several years now. Earlier this spring, ESPN’s Greg McElroy said he believed Simpson is the current leader for the job.
Mack began his career at Washington, but followed Kalen DeBoer to Alabama last offseason. He was a backup for the Crimson Tide last season and saw very limited action. He completed 2-of-3 passes for 39 yards and 1 touchdown against Mercer. He’ll be a redshirt sophomore in 2025.
Russell was the No. 2 overall player in the country for the 2025 high school class, according to 247Sports Composite rankings. As an early-enrollee, Russell does have a chance to learn Alabama’s system over the course of the offseason and potentially win the job.
A-Day is set for April 12.
