Earlier this week, the resignation of Mississippi State baseball coach Andy Cannizaro sent shockwaves through the sport.
Why would one of the top young coaches quit three games into the season?
On Thursday, ESPN reporter Ryan McGee reported on “Outside The Lines” that Cannizaro’s resignation came after he had an extramarital affair with a member of the MSU athletic department.

“There was an extramarital affair with an employee within the athletic department,” McGee said.
McGee went on to detail that the move came as a major surprise given how Cannizaro took the program to a Super Regional and that the Bulldogs were set to undergo a $50 million stadium renovation.
Mississippi State didn’t specify the reasoning surrounding Cannizaro’s sudden departure, which came on the heels of getting swept by Southern Miss. to start the season.
“I had a wonderful opportunity at Mississippi State, but unfortunately I made some poor decisions,” Cannizaro said in a release. “I hope Mississippi State University and all of the fans and people affected will one day forgive me.”
MSU named Gary Henderson the interim coach. He was the 2012 SEC Coach of the Year at Kentucky.
