The Auburn Tigers enter Saturday with a head coaching vacancy. It has been nearly a week since Gus Malzahn has been fired, and there’s no indication a hire will happen on Saturday.
There are a number of candidates out there, but the rumors out of Auburn are that interim head coach Kevin Steele could land the full-time job.
However, on Saturday morning’s College GameDay on ESPN, analyst David Pollack said he wouldn’t go with Steele. He added that he’d have Liberty’s Hugh Freeze as his top candidate:
“When you look at Auburn, if I was making the decision, I’m not paying someone $21 million to go and hire somebody I already had on staff,” Pollack said. “I know Kevin Steele is very much in the mix. I wouldn’t personally do that. I don’t understand why Hugh Freeze wouldn’t be the name. I’m not saying he’s going to be the next head coach, but he’d be the guy I’d go after because he’s proven it at multiple stops. He’s proven it in that league and had a lot of success. Rece, I would go to Hugh Freeze.”
At this point, it seems as if the ship has sailed on Freeze being a candidate at Auburn. Where will the Tigers turn? It’ll be interesting to see when this hire is made.
