The Texas Longhorns (7-2, 4-1 SEC) are finally starting to look like the team we anticipated they’d be in the preseason. Their 34-31 home win over Vanderbilt on Saturday boosted their College Football Playoff chances, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index, to 56.1%. Those odds are ninth-best in the nation.

Steve Sarkisian has his team playing its best ball at the most important time of the year. The question is, will it be too little too late? The Longhorns have just 3 games left to prove they belong in the CFP. Two of those contests — at Georgia, vs. Texas A&M — are against top 5 teams. The other is versus a pesky Arkansas squad that can light up the scoreboard.

Results around the country over the past couple weeks have potentially given Texas more room for error than previously theorized. We know with certainty that the Longhorns cannot lose 2 games — or go 2-1 with a loss to the Razorbacks — and make the CFP. If they can find a way to beat the Bulldogs or Aggies, and handle business versus Arkansas, they’ll be 9-3 (6-2 SEC). Would that be enough to nudge out a likely 10-2 Notre Dame team? Nobody can be sure.

Here are the FPI projections for Texas’ remaining games:

  • Nov. 15 at No. 5 Georgia – 42.4%
  • Nov. 22 vs. Arkansas – 85.4%
  • Nov. 28 vs. No. 3 Texas A&M – 56.7%

The Longhorns have a bye in Week 11 to prepare for the Bulldogs. Kickoff between Texas and Georgia in Week 12 is set for 7:30 p.m. E.T. (ABC).
