ESPN’s FPI predicts outcome of Auburn vs. Baylor showdown in Week 1
ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) is back with its predictions, setting the stage for an interesting opening week 1. Under the lights in Waco on Friday evening, there will be a rare clash between two powerhouse conferences—the SEC and the Big 12.
So who does the FPI predict will emerge victorious between Auburn and Baylor?
If you were considering placing a bet on this week one matchup, you might find yourself torn, as this one is really a toss-up, folks. The FPI slightly favors Baylor with a narrow edge of 51.8% over Auburn’s 48.2%.
Hugh Freeze enters his third season at Auburn with high hopes amidst the turbulent journey that has left many Tigers feeling restless. After finishing last fall with a disappointing 5-7 record and an overall 11-14 since his arrival, the demand to win is higher than ever on the Plains. FPI ranks Auburn at No. 21, projecting their win-loss record of roughly 6.9-5.1. While this outlook suggests a potential winning season, the big question remains: will it be enough to secure postseason play and a winning season finally for Freeze and the Tigers?
On the flip side, Baylor’s head coach Dave Aranda is recognized as one of the top defensive minds in college football. However, last season’s performance told a different story. The bears defense struggled significantly against high-octane offense, partly due to weakness in their secondary. In response, Baylor turned to the transfer portal to bolster its defensive back depth.
On paper, both teams boast impressive talent. Auburn features one of the best receiver rooms not only in the SEC but across college football. The pivotal question looms: can they come together cohesively and solidify that offensive front? or will continue to stumble with costly mistakes? Meanwhile Baylor’s secondary and their run game led by Bryson Washington are undoubtedly hoping for some misstep by Auburn.
This is the fourth meeting between these two programs in history, currently. Baylor leads the series 2-1-1, with their last victory dating back to 1976 whey they edged out Auburn 15-14.
Kickoff from McLane Stadium is set for 8 p.m. ET on Friday evening.
