To call the first few minutes of the Iowa State-Kansas State matchup in Ireland “sloppy” may be an understatement. But after the chaotic start, we finally have points on the board.
On first-and-10 with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter, Cyclone quarterback Rocco Becht connected with wideout Dominic Overby for a 23-yard touchdown. The over-the-shoulder grab came on a slot fade and gave Iowa State a 7-0 lead. It also extended Becht’s streak of consecutive games with a passing score to 19 — a school record.
It looked like the Cyclones would strike first on what was technically their second possession of the game. Kansas State running back Dylan Edwards muffed Iowa State’s opening punt, which gave the ‘Clones possession on the Wildcats’ 8-yard line. Moments later, though, Iowa State gave the ball right back, courtesy of a failed pitch from inside the 1-yard line.
The Cyclones entered the game as 3-point underdogs, per DraftKings. They led 7-0 after one quarter of play, but the Wildcats evened the score on the first snap of the second quarter when quarterback Avery Johnson raced across the goal line from 10 yards out.
Iowa State has won 4 of the past 5 games against Kansas State. Whichever school wins today’s contest will get a massive edge in the Big 12 standings and College Football Playoff race. You can tune into the game on ESPN.
