Though Nick Saban fell just short of Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly in AP Coach of the Year voting, the organization clearly held the SEC in high regard when determining the winner.

Five league coaches finished among the top 18 in voting for the award, according to a tweet from SEC Network news editor Brandon Zimmerman. Saban, Kentucky’s Mark Stoops, Florida’s Dan Mullen, LSU’s Ed Orgeron and Mississippi State’s Joe Moorhead all got fairly serious consideration for the honor.

Considering how well the season went for the coaches mentioned above, this isn’t that big of a surprise.

Orgeron helped LSU smash through unusually low expectations this season, while Stoops engineered one of the best years in Kentucky history. Mullen and Moorhead also did excellent jobs in their first seasons at their respective programs.

Saban, of course, has once again positioned Alabama to win a national championship. Still, the Crimson Tide’s dominance clearly wasn’t enough to take away from the rest of the SEC.
