Six SEC players, including Mississippi’s Evan Engram and Hunter Henry at Arkansas, have been named to the preseason watch list for John Mackey award, an honor presented annually to college football’s best tight end.
Engram caught 38 passes for 662 yards and two touchdowns as a sophomore last fall. Henry returns as Brandon Allen’s favorite target on third down following an impressive 37-catch, 513-yard campaign.
Both Engram and Henry, along with fellow Mackey watch list honoree O.J. Howard from Alabama, are listed as the top underclassmen at their position for next year’s NFL draft according to analyst Mel Kiper Jr.
Joining the trio on the Mackey watch list from the SEC is Florida’s Jake McGee, Vanderbilt’s Steven Scheu (the SEC’s leader in receptions by a tight end last fall) and South Carolina senior Jerell Adams.
