Florida is still literally paying the price for firing Jim McElwain.
The two sides agreed to a buyout of just over $7 million last season following the coach’s dismissal from the program despite McElwain’s contractual $12.9 million buyout at the time — this game after his “death threats” claim. The former Gator coach has already received a $3.75 million payment last December and $25,000 last February and is set to receive the next installment of his buyout on Sunday, July 1.
That amount? A cool $1 million.
McElwain is set to receive the same amount over the next two July 1st dates with a final $500,000 payment on July 1, 2021. These payments are not offset by McElwain’s job at Michigan and cannot be mitigated by any jobs he takes in the future. The McElwain household certainly has extra motivation to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday over the next several years.
Not bad considering his 22-12 overall record and 16-8 SEC record in his two and a half seasons in Gainesville.
