There may not have been a game this past weekend, but that doesn’t mean position battles couldn’t be decided for the Gators.

In his weekly press conference, Will Muschamp announced they have named a starter at punter, a position battle that last virtually all offseason.

“Kyle Christy will be our starting punter,” Muschamp said. “There are a lot of tough decisions we make. We make them for a reason, and what’s best for the organization. We felt like Kyle was a little more consistent but certainly Johnny is more than capable.”

Muschamp added he explained to the team that everyone has a role on this team and if you’re unhappy with your role, do something about it.

“I even told our team Thursday and talked to them about everybody’s role within the organization,” Muschamp said. “You don’t have to like your role, but you need to embrace it and if you don’t like it then do something about it. I asked our team, look at Kyle and Johnny. You make that decision because they are both really good players and there is only one punter.”

Christy was the starting punter in all past three seasons, but a poor start to the season last year led to Johnny Townsend taking over the punting duties for the latter half of 2013.

In his three-year career, Christy has averaged 42.16 yards per punt. He was a former All-American and Ray Guy Award finalist in 2012.
