Buddy Martin has been around Florida long enough to get a sense for how Wisconsin transfer Graham Mertz is fitting in with the Gators. More importantly, what he has to offer this season.
Martin, the long-time Florida talk show host, joined WJOX in Birmingham, Alabama, and the “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” show to share his thoughts. With Jack Miller III also from Ohio State previously, Martin noted how unusual it is from the “Fun ‘N’ Gun” days of the 1990s for the Gators.
“Kind of up in the air,” he said. “I can’t imagine the fact that Florida has 2 Big Ten quarterbacks to pick from, from the days of Steve Spurrier. I hear, and what little I’ve seen, we don’t get to see much anymore. He’s efficient. He’s a better player than people give him credit for. I think Nick Saban had him in there for a while at Tuscaloosa recruiting him. … He’s an efficient quarterback from what I know. He’s not going to probably beat you deep, or over the middle with 30 receptions. But remember, you guys have been around long enough to remember the term field general, right? The guy who knows how to run a game. That’s what I’m getting.”
