Florida loses 4-star in-state prospect via flip to ACC school

Florida football isn’t in a good state right now, as the Gators are sitting at 2-2 and have an absolute gauntlet of a schedule coming up the rest of the season. To make matters worse, Florida is also losing in-state recruits to schools from other conferences that they shouldn’t be losing to.

The latest example is 4-star safety Demetres Samuel, who announced on social media that he would be switching from Florida to Syracuse.

This shouldn’t come as quite a shock to the Gators fans, as Samuel was originally committed to the Orange before he reclassified from the 2026 class to 2025. After reclassifying, he committed to Florida in July but changed his mind as Syracuse coach Fran Brown continued to recruit him.

Samuel is from Palm Bay, Florida, and is currently the No. 21 safety in the class of 2025 and the No. 242 player in the entire country per the 247 Sports Composite. He is also the No. 38 prospect in the state of Florida. He is the highest ranked recruit in Syracuse’s class, as the Orange are ranked 36th in the 2025 class. That is only a few spots behind Florida, who sits at No. 31.

The Gators host an in-state opponent this week as UCF comes to Gainesville.
