Florida names team captains for Thursday’s game at Utah

Florida football announced its team captains on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s road contest at Utah. Representing the Gators will be cornerback Jason Marshall Jr., running back Montrell Johnson Jr., defensive end Princely Umanmielen and wide receiver Ricky Pearsall.

In addition to what he brings to the table from an intangibles perspective, Marshall is anticipated to be a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He finished out the 2022 season with 29 tackles, 8 pass breakups, 1 tackle for loss, 1 interception, and 1 quarterback hurry.

Umanmielen, who earned a number of preseason honors, finished as the team-leader in sacks (4.5), TFLs (9.5) and second in quarterback hurries (5) last season.

Johnson showed a high rate of progression in his first season at Florida, capping it off with 841 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 155 carries, making the jump over from ULL. The senior Pearsall, also in his first year in Gainesville after transferring over from Arizona State, recorded 33 receptions for 661 yards with 5 touchdowns.

The game between the Gators and the Utes is set to kick off at 8 p.m. ET. It will be aired on ESPN. If the Gators come out with a win, it will be keep them undefeated in the all-time series between the two squads where Florida currently stands undefeated.
