The rivalry between the Florida Gators and LSU Tigers jumped to a new level in 2016 when Hurricane Matthew forced the postponement and relocation of the scheduled game.
LSU fans felt the Gators were trying to duck them and Florida fans felt the Tigers were being whiny when it came to rescheduling the game, which the Gators eventually won in Baton Rouge.
Now, the two schools will face off in Gainesville this year on Florida’s homecoming, which will surely make the rivalry even more heated.
At SEC Media Days on Tuesday, Florida OL Martez Ivey said the LSU game on Saturday, Oct. 7, is the one the Gators are circling on their calendars, and not just because it’s homecoming. He said he now considers the Tigers to be Florida’s biggest rivals:
“It blew up,” Ivey said. “It was always FSU. Now, it’s LSU. Scheduled them on homecoming. Makes it more interesting.”
Coach Jim McElwain wouldn’t go that far, but did add that he considers LSU a major rival for the Gators, which makes the annual series even more fun:
“Rivalries are what make college football as awesome as it is,” McElwain said. “For us, it’s a great thing. We got a bunch of rivalries. Whether it be them [LSU], FSU, Georgia or Tennessee. That’s why you come to Florida to play in big ball games and great rivalries.”
One thing is for sure — this year’s game between the Gators and Tigers will be one of the more intense games of the entire SEC season.
